City Nature Challenge

April 24 – May 10

Join us in celebrating the wild side of Charlotte during the City Nature Challenge, a global community science event that invites you to explore nature right in your neighborhood.

From birds and bugs to plants and fungi, every observation counts. Using the iNaturalist app, you can document what you find and contribute to a worldwide effort to better understand urban biodiversity.

What is the City Nature Challenge?

Launched in 2016 as a friendly competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the City Nature Challenge has grown into an international movement. Each year, cities around the world collaborate in a four-day “bioblitz” to see what we can discover together. The event is organized by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

How to Participate

  • Download the iNaturalist app
  • Head outside anywhere in the Charlotte area
  • Take photos of plants and animals
  • Upload your observations to contribute to the challenge

Be part of the local movement by exploring the
City Nature Challenge: Charlotte Metro Region page and see what others are finding across the area. You can also learn more about the global event on the official City Nature Challenge website.
