Discovery Place’s aquarium is currently undergoing a major renovation as part of the Museum’s overall redesign. A diverse, new aquarium filled with tanks up to twice as large as the old aquarium will open in June 2010.

So, what happened to all the fish that used to live at Discovery Place?

Many of them were donated to other science centers and aquariums around the country. Some found homes in Hickory, some in Myrtle Beach and some went as far away as Houston and Boston. Our electric eel has found a temporary home at the Catawba Science Center but will be re-adopted when the aquarium reopens.

Some of the freshwater fish were reunited with old family as they were donated back to the local aquarium who first donated the fish to Discovery Place.

There are tropical reef inhabitants that are being grown and maintained at Charlotte Nature Museum. Please note that these species are not on public display at Charlotte Nature Museum but are being nurtured for their return to Discovery Place.

Christian, yes, there are sharks on exhibit. In World Alive's aquatic habitats, fifteen tanks of various sizes make up 24,000 gallons of seawater. You are introduced to global underwater ecological communities including a live Indo-Pacific coral reef with chocolate clownfish, sea apples, mandarin fish and many other species, as well as a seafloor reef rubble habitat featuring white-spotted bamboo sharks, zebra sharks, blue-spotted stingrays and other benthic creatures. A special North Carolina saltmarsh environment features creatures native to the state's coast such as the oyster toadfish, striped burrfish, and brown sea cucumber. As you progress further through the aquatic experience into the Adaptation Room, you will encounter many brilliantly-hued species of sealife including moon jellyfish, Atlantic lined seahorse and long tentacle anemone. We hope to see you at Discovery Place soon.

You said above that the aquarium would be reopening in June of 2010. Has the aquarium been repoened or has this been postponed. My husband and I have been looking forward to finally be able to bring our daughter. When are you looking at reopening the aquarium?
