Talk Like A Pirate Day Weekend Activities at Discovery Place

Saturday, Sept. 19 — Sunday, Sept. 20

September 14, 2009

Families visiting SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure can enjoy a day of swashbuckling, special programming and pirate-themed activities perfect for the little lads and lassies in honor of National Talk Like A Pirate Day Weekend, Saturday, Sept. 19 — Sunday, Sept. 20. Children, ages 11 and younger who dress like a pirate, receive free admission to the Museum this weekend only.

During the festive weekend, guests can brush up on their pirate phrases with fellow pirate characters. All hands on deck will be called for a pirate ship building competition with Kapla Blocks. ‘Captain kids’ can get a motley make-over with special effects make-up. Guests also can learn about the craft of building ships in a bottle presented by Jim Goodwin from Carolina Ships in a Bottle. And there’s booty to be had! Visitors can participate in a special scavenger hunt while exploring the Museum’s current exhibition, SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure and enter to win a $250 Food Lion gift card.

Guests can plunge beneath the sea to uncover the mysteries of some of the world’s most-famous shipwrecks at the Museum’s current exhibition, SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure. Featuring interactive, multimedia experiences and hundreds of priceless artifacts and treasures, the exhibition is free with Museum admission and runs through January 31, 2010.

Discovery Place is located in uptown Charlotte at 301 N. Tryon Street. Convenient parking is available in the Museum’s parking garage — the Carol Grotnes Belk Complex — at the corner of Sixth and Church Streets. For more information about Discovery Place, guests should call 704-372-6261 or visit discoveryplace.org.
